The Neighbor utilizes conventions like different fonts, wardrobe, incidental music, and camera shots. Because of our conventions in out film, it helped our class understand our film's plot. Our film is engaging as it is a horror/thriller that shows how a girl in high school, Sarah, get's kidnapped by Patty, a loner and stalker, as Sarah is best friends with Ally, the person who mainly bullies Patty. Patty kidnaps Sarah as revenge on Ally for being mean to her for most of her high school years. Also, our audience is in suspense as our film cuts off when Sarah is missing and Patty is seen to hold a knife in Ally's kitchen.
Since Patty is the antagonist in The Neighbor, my group and I decided to dress myself up in all black and wear black eyeshadow to give off a scary vibe. Ally is our movies' protagonist and this can be seen through her wardrobe as she wears cute and trendy clothing. Ashely and Sarah also wear fashionable clothing, following Ally's lead and this shows that this group is popular. This relates to the horror movie Hush as the antagonist wears all black and the protagonist wears casual and cute clothes.
Also, the establishing shot in the beginning of the film shows Ally's house compared to Patty's house. The comparison shows how Ally lives in a new, modern house and Patty lives in a run down, old house. This is of importance as Ally's house gives off a happy and popular vibe as she lives in a nice house, while Patty's house gives off a creepy vibe as she lives in a run down house.
The use of incidental music in the middle of our film when Patty breaks into Ally's house shows that something bad is going to happen in the next few scenes, as Sarah got kidnapped by Patty. Get Out and A Quiet Place also utilize scary incidental music to inform the audience that something bad is going to happen in the future.
Our movie's font is Courier New Bold as this font looks like typewriter letters. This font represents the investigation of Sarah missing and how eventually detectives will be on the case to track her down. We thought that this font looked like the font detectives use when gathering information on a missing person in movies, so we decided to use it.
Our conventions represent different social groups as young girls are more attracted to our movie as they can relate to Ally, Ashely, and Sarah. This is because Ally, Ashely, and Sarah wear fashionable and trendy clothing, which will give these girls ideas for their own wardrobe. This is different to most horror movies because our lead roles are girls, and usually guys play the main characters in horror movies. For example, men have played lead roles in horror movies like Get Out, Sinister, and Insidious. We wanted to address the social issue of teenage girls bullying other girls for being different. In our film, the three girls form a clique and exclude Patty from it as she lives in an old house and wears black clothes. Ally is seen as a bully as she yells "What are you looking at creep!" to Patty. We want to acknowledge this issue in our film as we want young girls to see how bullying is wrong and how it can end up getting you in a bad position.
